Why do I need a SARS tax clearance certificate to financially emigrate from South Africa?

Financial emigration is a process whereby you formalise your permanent exit from South Africa for exchange control purposes. When you financially emigrate, you inform the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) that you have financially permanently left South Africa. For this to be finalised, you have to be in good standing with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and prove this to the financial authorities in your new country. A tax clearance certificate is valid proof of this declaration.
